Our Level II Adult Trauma Center is the second busiest in Maryland and is staffed 24/7 with board-certified acute care (trauma and emergency general surgery) and surgical critical care surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, anesthesiologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, vascular surgeons, and critical care specialists. University of Maryland Capital Region Health is “changingUP” healthcare in Prince George’s County. Injury Prevention: JHBMC successfully held their second “Stop the Bleed” marathon training throughout the day on “National Stop the Bleed Day” in May of 2022 and also provides STB to community organizations. JHBMC trauma program members actively support the Maryland Committee on Trauma’s Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses Courses as Course Directors and Instructors. JHBMC supports nursing staff attendance to the Emergency Nurses’ Association Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum (TNCC) and supports nurses pursuing national certification in trauma nursing by obtaining the Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) designation by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing. Research: The integrated Division of Acute Care Surgery provides JHBMC with opportunities to join new and ongoing research initiatives focused on trauma care. Trauma team members also participated in the “Race to Rebuild 5K” to support trauma survivors during Trauma Awareness Month. JHBMC celebrated Trauma Survivors during National Trauma Awareness Month in May 2022. Notable Accomplishments: The Bayview Trauma Advanced Practice Providers (APP) Service expanded to four APPs who provide care exclusively for trauma patients facilitating more admissions to the Trauma Service with the goal of better patient outcomes through dedicated, specialized care. JHBMC remains among one of the busiest trauma centers in the state by patient volume. From June 1, 2021, through May 31, 2022, JHBMC treated 2,650 trauma patients according to the Maryland State Trauma Registry. This was Lily Flader's second time attending Trauma Day. While students explored health care roles, they also received important information from experts who work in a Level 1 Trauma Center on staying safe and on injury prevention strategies for their age group. Students had the opportunity to interact with mock patients in the simulation lab and learn about robotic equipment in the operating room.ĭuring the event, students rotated through 10 different stations hosted by teams involved in the care of a trauma patient, including getting the chance to look at a specially fitted helicopter dedicated to air transport. Volunteers from each department shared their personal stories - from how they started on this career path to their current day-to-day - and showcased how they work together to respond to and care for a trauma patient.
